Among the sustainable proceedings that can be used to product ceramic and composite materials, the SHS synthesis shows many advantages even if some security precautions are needed for industrial production.
Synthesis by self-combustion makes it possible not only to develop materials in the form of powders but also more or less porous compacts by using the energy released by the synthesis for the densification. The synthesized phases can evolve according to the conditions of temperature, pression, gaseous atmosphere, etc. and therefore lead to different properties on the final material.
Examples will be presented for applications in various fields:
(a) materials (synthesis of powders) and environment (depollution by particles coming from bentonites)
(b) nuclear domain (zirconium oxide)
(c) porous materials (based on mullite)
(d) composites (intermetallic reinforced by refractories).
